*The Alchemist

bc the alchemist    Our January book was an older novel, “The Alchemist,” by Paulo Coelho.  As an international bestseller, we had talked about reading this book a few times, but never seemed to get around to it.

It’s a simple and quick read for those months when schedules are tight and reading takes a back seat.   A few of our members compared the book to Mitch Albom’s, “The Five People You Meet in Heaven.”

The story follows Santiago on his mission to find his Personal Legend (your deepest desire/goal). He sets out on his mission because of a reoccurring dream and runs into many different characters along his journey.

One of the first characters Santiago encounters is the King of Salem who explains what a Personal Legend is and that a mysterious force will try to convince him that his goal will be impossible.  He further explains that even though the mysterious force appears to be negative at first it will actually show him how to realize his Personal Legend.  Santiago is confused and bewildered but carries on.

“To realize one’s destiny is a person’s only real obligation.  All things are one.  And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it,” (page 22.)

Fate cooperates with those in pursuit of their Personal Legend.  Even in fearful situations as long as one stays focused on his goal they have nothing to fear, their destiny has been written.  “Every search begins with beginner’s luck.  And every search ends with the victor’s being severely tested,” (page 132).

Fear is a common theme in the book.  “If a person is living out his Personal Legend, he knows everything he needs to know.  There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure,” (page 141). You need to disregard your fear to remain on your goal and become embrace your Personal Legend.

At book club we talked about the various themes running in the book, fear, nature, pursuit of dreams and spiritual growth.  Most of our members felt happy after reading the book and that’s a wonderful result.

The book definitely drums into the reader – follow your dreams.  We all need a little reminder of that every so often. The Alchemist” is a light, enjoyable read filled with promise.  It’s a good book to read when life feels overwhelming.
