*The Art of Racing in the Rain

bc the art of racing in the rain

Such a sweet novel written in a dog’s point of view.  Enzo, a Lab Terrier mix, tells the story of his life with Denny.  At first it’s just the two of them,  but life happens and Denny eventually marries, Eve, and they have a daughter, Zoe.  Denny wants to be a race car driver and works hard to break into racing.   The best laid plans never seem to go in a direct route and Enzo and Denny find themselves on life’s roller coaster.

According to Enzo, dogs love TV and he watches a lot of it.  His favorite thing to watch are the tapes Denny has on racing, especially the tapes where Denny is driving.  The bond between Denny and Enzo feels very real, or as we mortal humans imagine our dogs to feel about us.

Trouble begins slowly at first with Eve not feeling well, and the pace picks up along with the troubles as Eve’s illness gets worse.  If Enzo could communicate he could have told everyone about Eve’s illness and it frustrates him that he can’t.

As you might expect, there are some funny situations that Enzo, as a dog, can only deal with in his own way.  Not wanting to give away anything, but the evil zebra (the dark creature) scene is hilarious, at least until the family comes home.

There are also very poignant scenes dealing with families, and some cruel scenes too.  Enzo works his magic on the family to the best of his ability.  My favorite scene comes towards the end and it involves Denny, Enzo, and a race car at the track.

Everyone liked this book at book club.  It was an easy read, a little sad, but it is uplifting in the end.  We discussed dogs and how they enrich our lives, all pets for that matter.  Everyone loved the evil zebra scene.  We talked about family and what exactly was Eve thinking not going to the doctor.

I would recommend this book for book club especially when you need an easier and friendly read.  It was original and very cute.  May all our pets follow Enzo’s lead!
